With lots of things to do, Autumn is an amazing season to visit New York. From strolling through street corners where scenes from some of your favorite movies were shot to watching new musicals that are released on Broadway in the fall. You can even run into the New York City Marathon or stroll through parks colored in ochre and pink hues.
The city’s ambiance touches all five of your senses in autumn:
First, there’s the colors. The trees explode into a million shades, from gold to orange to garnet, before the winter arrives. One good place to enjoy the foliage is the zoo. You can also go on a city-wide hunt to discover unexplored parks, especially ones with views. If you reach a hilltop, you’ll be able to enjoy the way the light gives new dimensions to trees and skyscrapers alike.
Now that you’re overlooking the city, hear that roar? Autumn is football season, and hockey starts soon too, so don’t miss out on the excitement!
Fall is also festival season in New York City, with special fashion, comedy and film events spread across the boroughs. Listen to comedy routines, feel the latest silks on display and immerse yourself in an emotional visual journey with the thousands of artistic works that make their way through this cultural hub of city.
Speaking of holidays, autumn means it’s time for Halloween and Thanksgiving. You can dress up and party for All Hallows Eve, watch the famous Thanksgiving Day Parade and volunteer for the community. There are lots of opportunities to lend a hand, and not just on the fourth Thursday of November. Plus, if you’re around for Black Friday, New York might just be home to the biggest of all shopping sprees.
Fall is also a perfect opportunity to discover international festivals. This diverse metropolis is home to thousands of celebrations being held by its multicultural population. Look around for all the parties, alive and well just around the corner.
No matter where you are from, festivities mean food, too. Autumn is harvest season and it couldn’t be plainer to see than at the city’s myriad farmers’ markets. Fall flavors are important to this town, which would not be the same without the honeycrisp apple.
Fuel up your energy with food, now it’s time to get back out there and discover the city that never sleeps. Open House New York is an urban design and architecture event whose very own website says its best: “offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York.” There are tours, talks and special events at hundreds of locations to get to know and love her better than ever before.
Taking care of New Amsterdam’s urban jewel means understanding where she comes from and how she grew up, as well as how the structures we build affect our relationships with New York. What better and more fascinating way to learn about improving and preserving our cities, and therefore, our whole environment? You can ever volunteer at his event, bringing the experience even closer to home as you help make it possible for everyone to enjoy.
The best opportunity to view an entire cityscape is from a wide-open space… like an ice-skating rink! Ice-skating starts in October at Rockefeller Center, the most famous ice around. This is the right spot for a selfie, maybe one that could turn into your holiday greeting card. It’s not the only rink in town, though, and if you bring your own skates to some of them, you can ice skate for free! Now there’s something special in New York!
You’ve learned to love the city by now, every block, so it’s time to show some love to all the boroughs. You will love the Brooklyn Flea market, a big sale held weekly at two locations. This is a perfect plan for when the fall winds are getting chillier and you want to head indoors, but still be out and about, not to mention snag a deal from local vendors. While you’re there, you can do some vintage shopping for a sweater to keep you cozy warm as you stroll through Central Park with your hot cider…
If you need more ideas, check out TimeOut, the website that publishes everything there is to do in New York (if that’s even possible). You’ll find even more cool ideas for autumn there, like Smithsonian Museum Day, the Coffee Festival, the city’s Octoberfest…
Here’s wishing you an autumn full of the sights, sounds, aromas and flavors, textures and activities that the Big Apple has to offer!
